650 euros for a pair of sneakers from a luxury brand? A price that is never really questioned. It exists in the room and justifies itself through what people are supposed to see in it. You are not simply buying a shoe, but an idea. Quality, style, aspiration. And the subtle message that it is not meant for everyone.

This image sustains itself. A logo, a price tag and the right context are enough. The rest follows automatically. The simple questions rarely come first. Where is the shoe actually made? Who produces it? And what exactly makes it different from others? Once you look closer, it becomes surprisingly tangible. Industrial areas in Portugal. Highly specialized factories that have spent decades doing nothing but producing footwear at a very high level. No spectacle, no mythology. Just routine, experience and precision.
Many sneakers sold by luxury brands for 600 euros and more are made in exactly these factories in Portugal. The same factories we work with.
In these places, brand names do not matter. What matters is whether the product works. In fact, many shoes from these brands are produced in the very same factories in Portugal as ours. And at that point, the perspective begins to shift. The shoe does not lose its quality, but it loses part of its narrative. What remains are materials, craftsmanship and fit. Things that can actually be evaluated.

We operate within exactly these structures, but make different decisions. In our choice of materials, in development, and in the way we collaborate with our partners. Our bio-leather is more demanding, more complex to work with and, in many cases, ultimately the better choice. More durable, more comfortable and more responsible.

Of course, that comes at a price. Our shoes are not as cheap as mass-produced products from Asia. But for what they are, they offer exceptional value. Also because there are no shareholders in the background demanding maximum returns. We calculate from the product itself, not from external expectations. And instead of investing millions into luxury magazine campaigns, we invest in materials, development and quality.

                <![CDATA[
Why we need to talk openly about material quality Vegan sneakers represent a conscious approach to resources. This has been an important topic for us for many years. At the same time, we are witnessing a development that is rarely discussed openly. Many vegan upper materials have noticeably declined in quality. They tear more easily, crack at flex points or lose their surface coating. A shoe that lasts only a short time is not sustainable, no matter how eco-friendly it is marketed. We have experienced this decline as well. Materials that used to perform reliably have become significantly more fragile. Suppliers rarely address these issues clearly. This is why we test every vegan alternative in independent laboratories and only use materials that withstand stress, temperature changes and abrasion over the long term.

What we see in the market Many vegan materials currently show: - low abrasion resistance - weak flex stability - fast surface wear - short lifespan in real-world use These problems are rarely addressed in marketing, but customers feel them very quickly once they start wearing the shoes.

Why we do not use so-called fruit leather Terms like apple leather or grape leather sound natural and environmentally friendly, but they rarely reflect the actual composition. Most of these materials consist primarily of plastic, usually PU or PVC. Small amounts of organic fibers are added and often serve more as a marketing element than a functional one. What we found in testing: - low durability - rapid cracking at flex points - hardly any recyclability, because biomass and plastic are permanently bonded, which makes disposal difficult We have tested these materials multiple times. They look appealing at first, but they lose their structure very quickly during real wear. This is why we do not use them. For vegan models, we prefer high-quality recycled microfibers or recycled PET, which are more stable and longer-lasting.

How we work at ekn - all materials are tested in independent laboratories - we examine abrasion, movement, temperature resistance and long-term behavior - only safe and durable options enter our production - we continuously test new material recipes to improve our vegan range - ekn is PETA certified

Why we use leather Leather is often viewed critically, especially conventional leather, which is mostly tanned with chrome or other heavy metals. This process leads to contaminated wastewater, chemical residues and heavily coated surfaces that behave more like plastic and lose their natural breathability. Our approach: - we use only chrome-free and metal-free tanned leather, produced without toxic heavy metals - it contains no substances that would be problematic for skin contact or the environment - it remains breathable, flexible and repairable - it develops a natural patina instead of cracking or peelin - the hides are a by-product of the European meat industry and would be discarded otherwise - the small leftover substances from tanning can be used as natural fertilizer - our leathers come from Europe, often from the same region as our production, keeping transport distances minimal This creates a material that is durable, safe, and responsibly processed. A shoe made from such leather lasts for many years and can be repaired, which strengthens true sustainability.

Vegan models remain part of ekn We will continue offering vegan models that meet our quality standards. And we aim to expand this part of the collection once we find vegan materials that are reliably strong, safe and long-lasting. Our stance: Vegan is not a marketing strategy for us. It is a responsibility. And that responsibility means: - vegan only when a material truly holds up - vegan only when we can stand behind its ingredients - vegan only when it is sustainable in the long run We continue working on vegan alternatives that meet these expectations. Until we find materials that are stable, safe and resource-efficient, we choose solutions that align with our values, whether vegan or made from chrome-free leather.

Green it is! It’s time for our next Special Drop: welcome our Tassel Loafer Fig, whose color was chosen by the community. Why our Loafer? Tiktok & other streetwear brands promote chunky loafers, while we want to stay true to our values of longevity and sustainability: We present a timeless classic to you: flat, slim, casual. Our branding is quietly embedded at the sides, the seams are off-white for a little pinch of contrast. Fig is made of chrome free tanned suede, the interlining consist of vegetable tanned calfskin. Therefore, you can easily wear Fig barefoot if you prefer to do so. The high quality leather sole also contains rubber in order to protect the sole from damage and you from slipping. The moccasin construction ensures you premium comfort and flexibility.

  Get your Fig now
The loafer’s vita Today we are familiar with loafers as everyday shoes, but they have served different purposes historically and culturally. Early moccasins were worn by Native American Powhatan, before the 20th century, without fastenings and undyed. Moccasin simply means shoe. Norwegian sailors wire moccasin-like shoes as workwear. After exports to North America, the shoe turned into a stylistic rather than a functional choice as the literary scene in New York ,ade the elegant and comfortable loafer popular. The shoe also became a statement piece for women as their first female work shoe apart from high heels that paved the way for a more androgynous style in offices. Inspired by Oxfords with tassel lacing, the tassel loafer came into being in the late 1940s, thanks to Hollywood actor Paul Lukas. At first, it became a faithful companion for Ivy League students, who mainly wore the shoes without socks. Today, the loafer is no longer considered posh but has also found its way into street style: you get the sustainable best of both worlds of a leather shoe.
A tribute to our beginnings Maybe some of you that accompany us since way way back remember our first Tassel Loafer that we launched at the beginning of ekn footwear as a collaboration with Highsnobiety in 2013 under the name of Le Berlinois. In 2025, we want to pay tribute to our first steps by bringing back a refined version of our forgotten classic as our 2nd special drop.

Not just anyone's, but yours. Your loafer’s tassels are interchangeable. The tassel set contains 4 colors (green, purple, black & camel) so that you can individualize your shoe the way you want it: as a monochrome classic or colorblocked in a modern way - as unique as you like it.

Your Fig Loafer’s way to you You may already be familiar with our Special Drop procedure from Quince, as Fig is also produced on pre-order only. It’s crucial that you choose the right size for your feet using our size chart, as your shoe will be made especially for you. This ensures that your Fig fits you perfectly while avoiding overproduction. Unlike fast fashion production chains, your personal Fig is sustainable and timeless. You have one month to place your order, after which production begins in Portugal. It takes 2-3 months until delivery and the arrival of your sustainably produced Fig to find its permanent place in your shoe collection.

Our Creative Director Marek talks about the development of his favorite unreleased shoe:
A shoe between the past and the future Can a leather shoe be classic AND futuristic? As I begin to take more and more interest in elegant shoes in 2022, the sneaker designer in me inevitably asks this question. After all, the ekn design philosophy is characterized by retro futurism – the idea of a future as it was imagined in past decades. As a film nerd with a weakness for sci-fi, I have seen countless future scenarios on the big screen. And I always notice the same thing: shoes rarely get the attention they deserve. This observation ultimately gave rise to the basic idea for the Quince – a desert boot from an alternative future, inspired by one of our very first models, the Max Herre Desert Boot.

  Get your Quince now
Mix & Match One of our greatest passions in design is combining different ideas to create something completely new. The Quince deliberately breaks with the classic shape of the Max Herre with its aggressive silhouette. A thicker, straight sole, a shorter and rounder forefoot, and elements reminiscent of diving boots create a sporty, futuristic hybrid look. Particularly striking are the neoprene inner shoe with graphic branding, elastic laces with cord stoppers, and a distinctive zipper that extends almost to the middle of the shoe. Small details such as the perforation on the toe box, a metal rivet in a contrasting color on the lacing, and a nylon strap on the heel underline the performance character. Even though the look is modern, the basic materials remain deliberately classic: just like the Max Herre, the Quince is also made from our highest-quality leather. This oiled, particularly thick raw-edge leather is robust yet supple, making it significantly more durable than most conventional types of leather. To stay true to the roots of the desert boot, we continue to make the sole from natural rubber. This material adapts perfectly to different temperatures and has exactly the properties that a futuristic shoe needs.

Why only now? It took a while to get the Quince ready. Not because we lacked ideas, but because every detail and every feature had to be just right. I wore, tested, and optimized the shoe for over 1.5 years and 2 winters. At the same time, as a small brand, we were forced by the pandemic to temporarily focus on our top sellers, which is why the project had to be put on hold. Now we finally have the capacity to work on more experimental designs again—and the next models are already in the works. Until now, I was the only one who had the privilege of wearing the Quince. That is finally changing, and the long wait has had a nice side effect: in the shop, you can see pictures of my own Quince after 1.5 years of intensive wear—a preview, so to speak, of the patina that the natural materials will develop over time.

How the Quince comes to you: We only produce the Quince on pre-order. Once the minimum quantity has been reached, production starts in Portugal – so your shoe is made especially for you. That's why we need to make sure it fits you perfectly. There is a size chart for this purpose, which you should definitely use. Anyone who already wears Max Herre shoes can use their size as a guide. With this new type of release, we not only ensure that everyone gets their desired size, but we also avoid overproduction. This means that your shoes are not part of the fast-paced fashion cycle, but a sustainable product with substance..

Once on the verge of extinction, the Mediterranean monk seal population is recovering, thanks to ongoing conservation efforts. These rare marine mammals – distinguished by their large eyes, whiskers, and agility in water – are the only seal species native to the Mediterranean. About half of the estimated 800 individuals live in Greek waters, where sea caves provide natural shelters for breeding and raising pups.

Decades of habitat loss and conflict with fishermen, who saw the seals as nuisances for damaging nets and stealing fish, led to a severe population decline. As a result, the species was classified as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Protecting monk seals requires not only safeguarding the species but also the broader marine ecosystem they depend on. MOm (The Hellenic Society for the Study and Protection of the Monk Seal), a specialized rehabilitation centre based in Greece, leads these efforts. They have cared for dozens of seals, responding to reports of animals in distress, providing medical treatment, and supporting their gradual reintroduction into the wild. Seals are monitored with only minimal human interaction during rehabilitation to ensure successful adaptation upon release. Once healthy and equipped with essential survival skills, they are tagged for tracking and returned to their natural environment.

These conservation efforts have shown measurable success. In recent years, the species‘ status on the IUCN Red List improved from critically endangered to endangered, and as of 2023, further advanced to vulnerable. While still at risk, this change reflects significant progress in reversing a long-standing decline. It also highlights the importance of sustained protection, collaboration, and public awareness in preserving the world’s rarest animals.

In a joint interview with Vöslauer, ekn founder Noel and Creative Director Marek talk about responsibility, design and why sustainability doesn't stop with materials. Here is a small preview: Marek, as Creative Head - where do you get your inspiration from and how does it become a tangible design? That differs greatly! At the forefront is pop culture: music, films, art. That's where the journey starts and I ask myself a lot of questions. Sometimes quite abstract: what would jazz look like as a shoe, sometimes quite rational: what makes a shoe perfect for a hot summer, or quite selfish: which shoe is missing in my wardrobe? Painting is also a great passion for me and my pictures often inspire the color choice of our shoes. Read the whole interview on jungbleiben.com

Whether you're a soda fan, sneakerhead or simply looking for your new favorite shoe - take the chance now to make a statement that is not only fashionable but also sustainable. We wish you lots of fun designing and keep our fingers crossed!

A groundbreaking Canadian study reveals that beta-glucan - a component found in all fungi, including mushrooms, yeast, and grains like oats and barley - can effectively reprogram immune cells to reduce flu-related lung inflammation. Conducted by scientists at the McGill University Health Centre, the preclinical research showed that administering beta-glucan prior to influenza exposure decreased lung damage, improved function, and increased survival rates.

Published in Nature Immunology, the study shifts focus from blocking viral replication to enhancing “disease tolerance” - a strategy that modulates the body’s immune response rather than directly targeting the virus. Researchers discovered that beta-glucan alters the behavior of neutrophils, immune cells typically linked with inflammation, enabling them to limit harmful overreactions in the lungs. They also note that beta-glucan‘s presence in the human microbiome could influence individual immune responses.

As concerns over bird flu (H5N1), seasonal influenza and other infections persist, these findings offer a promising path toward new, immune-focused treatments for viral respiratory illnesses. The team plans to explore its potential in human therapies, emphasizing the urgency of developing effective respiratory disease treatments.

Scientists have revealed that whale urine is an important part of marine fertilization, as the animals transport and distribute vital nutrients this way.

Scientists have long known that whales contribute to ocean health by releasing nutrient-rich feces, but new research reveals another vital factor: whale urine. A study published in Nature Communications shows that whale urine, like their feces, is rich in essential nutrients such as nitrogen and therefore plays a critical role in fertilizing coastal and open ocean ecosystems.

According to Joe Roman, a biologist at the University of Vermont, animals basically act as the planet’s circulatory system, moving nutrients across vast distances. Whales, for example, feed in nutrient-dense deep waters and then release these nutrients at the surface, creating what Roman and his colleagues call a „whale pump“ that boosts plankton growth and supports marine food chains. Their latest study focuses on the „great whale conveyor belt“ - a phenomenon where whales transport nutrients thousands of miles during their seasonal migrations.

Using data from six migrating whale species, the team found that whales can transport around 4,000 tons of nitrogen and 45,000 tons of biomass each year. Before industrial whaling, these numbers might have been three times higher. Interestingly, whales don’t just distribute nutrients with their urine; their migrations concentrate nutrients in breeding grounds, providing essential support to ecosystems like coral reefs. The sheer size and behavior of whales mean they impact ocean ecosystems on a planetary scale—something previously thought unique to humans. But researchers now view whales as key players in sustaining ocean health, a fact that fundamentally changes how we understand the balance of marine ecosystems.

In 2005, psychiatrist Dr. Dixon Chibanda lost a patient to suicide, because her family couldn‘t afford the bus fare to bring her to the hospital, highlighting the severe lack of mental health services in his home country Zimbabwe. With only 10 psychiatrists serving 13 million people, he realized the need for an accessible mental health solution.

In 2006, he launched the Friendship Bench, training grandmothers as community-based therapists. These women, trusted figures in their communities, became the first point of contact for people with mental health issues. Originally called the Mental Health Bench, the program struggled due to stigma until the grandmothers suggested renaming it the Friendship Bench, making it more inviting. The initiative started with 14 grandmothers and has since expanded to over 3,000 older listeners who have helped more than 300,000 people in Zimbabwe alone. Addressing a global mental health crisis with an estimated 300 Million people affected worldwide, the program has since expanded to nine countries.

A screening process refers severe cases to professionals, but research shows grandmothers are often more effective than trained therapists in reducing depression and anxiety. Chibanda attributes this to the life experiences and empathy of older adults. Grandparents bring wisdom, resilience, and lived experiences to their interactions, making the therapy deeply impactful. Meanwhile, the grandmothers themselves find renewed purpose and fulfillment in helping others. As loneliness and depression rise globally, the Friendship Bench is proving to be a simple yet powerful model for bringing mental health support to underserved communities.

Linnunsuo wetland in Finland used to be a lifeless „moonscape,“ but through the efforts of local fishers and an environmental group called Snowchange it has been transformed into a thriving and biodiverse ecosystem. Originally drained and mined for peat by an energy company in the 1980s, the site was left scarred and deserted. With highly acidic soil and water pH levels dropping to 2.77 it became impossible for plants and animals to survive there. In 2010, alarming fish deaths in nearby rivers prompted local communities to take action, leading to the launch of restoration efforts in 2011.

The restoration involved rehydrating the land by building interconnected dams and pools, effectively stopping peat decomposition, which had been releasing harmful CO2 into the atmosphere. This critical step not only restored the wetland’s carbon storage capacity but also set the stage for a remarkable ecological recovery. Within a year, life began returning. Today, Linnunsuo is home to 205 bird species, including the threatened Northern Pintail and the vulnerable Greater Spotted Eagle. Larger wildlife like bears, wolverines, and moose now frequent the area, while sphagnum moss has reestablished itself, further enhancing the areas carbon storage. Snowchange‘s success stems from blending traditional and scientific knowledge and empowering local communities to lead conservation efforts.

Linnunsuo has become a global symbol of hope, demonstrating how degraded ecosystems can be revived. While challenges remain, such as slower recovery in certain areas, the wetland’s transformation offers a model for future restoration projects and a reminder of humanity’s potential to positively impact nature.

In the U.S., about 30-40% of food is discarded - but a team of researchers and chefs have found an exciting way to turn that waste into gourmet dishes using an unexpected ingredient: Neurospora intermedia, a type of fungus. The initiative is led by Vayu Hill-Maini, a chef-scientist at UC Berkeley, whose team has detailed the fungus’s benefits in the journal Nature Microbiology. Neurospora intermedia ferments various byproducts, such as fruit pulp and plant-based milk waste, without releasing harmful mycotoxins. This process not only enhances the food’s taste but also improves its nutritional content.

With roots in Indonesian cuisine, where it’s used to make oncom, a dish from soy pulp, Neurospora intermedia can break down cellulose into bioavailable nutrients. This has caught the attention of chefs like Andrew Luzmore from Blue Hill at Stone Barns, who uses it to give plant-based sausage a smooth texture or to transform stale rice bread. Luzmore describes its flavor as adaptable, ranging from fruity and mushroom-like to a cheesy taste when cooked, which allows him to add unique notes to dishes.

Beyond just flavors, Neurospora intermedia could also improve food systems by reducing waste and repurposing ingredients that would otherwise be thrown away. Hill-Maini hopes to continue innovating with this fungus, potentially creating meat and dairy alternatives and hosting workshops to educate others. Both Luzmore and Hill-Maini believe that Neurospora intermedia offers a sustainable and flavorful tool to reduce food waste and inspire new possibilities in the culinary world.

Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is more than just a pop culture phenomenon; a recent study shows it can benefit autistic individuals by fostering social connections. Researchers have found that with their clear and structured rules, tabletop role-playing games like D&D can help autistic people navigate social interactions. According to the study the game can boost confidence, create a sense of belonging, and offer an escape from the everyday challenges often faced by those with autism.

The study involved eight autistic participants who played D&D online in two groups. Post-session interviews revealed that players felt emotionally invested in their characters and built strong bonds with their fellow players. Some participants explored different facets of their personalities through their characters, allowing them to adopt new perspectives. Many even incorporated positive traits from their characters into real-life interactions, a psychological effect called „bleed.“ The role-playing environment of D&D encourages creative problem-solving, teamwork, and empathy, all within a controlled and structured setting that feels manageable. For those on the autism spectrum, this provides a safe way to engage with others without the pressure of unwritten social rules that often create anxiety. By stepping into different roles, players can experiment with new ways of thinking and interacting, which they can then apply in the real world.

The findings of the study underscore how D&D and other TRPGs can challenge long-standing stereotypes about autism. These games are not merely a form of escapism; they can serve as valuable tools for personal development. By creating opportunities for autistic individuals to safely explore social dynamics, TRPGs offer an avenue for meaningful growth, both in the game and beyond. This suggests that these games can be used therapeutically, potentially offering new pathways for support in social skill-building programs and mental health care for those on the spectrum.

The Iberian lynx, one of the world‘s rarest cats, has been reclassified from „endangered“ to „vulnerable“ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This update reflects a significant population increase from 62 mature individuals in 2001 to 648 in 2022, with an estimated total population of over 2,000 when including both young and mature lynx. Native to Spain and Portugal, the lynx faced drastic declines from the 1960s due to habitat loss, poaching, and road accidents, pushing the species to near extinction.

Conservation efforts have been pivotal in this recovery. Key strategies included boosting populations of the lynx‘s primary prey, the endangered European rabbit, releasing captive lynxes, and restoring their natural habitats. Francisco Javier Salcedo Ortiz, a conservation coordinator, hailed the recovery as the greatest ever achieved for a cat species through conservation efforts. However, Ortiz emphasized that significant work remains to ensure the species‘ survival and further recovery, with plans to reintroduce the lynx to new areas in central and northern Spain.

The IUCN highlighted that the lynx‘s habitat has expanded from 449 sq km in 2005 to 3,320 sq km today. Despite these gains, the IUCN cautions that the species still faces threats from disease, poaching, and road accidents, which could reverse the gains made, underscoring the ongoing need for vigilant conservation efforts.

Marine scientists have found a new species of fungus named Parengyodontium album (P.album), which is capable of breaking down plastic. This finding marks the fourth known marine fungus with this ability. P. album was discovered among microbes on the floating plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and can degrade polyethylene, a common and pervasive plastic used in consumer products like water bottles and grocery bags.

UV light helps in the mechanical breakdown of plastic and facilitates its biological degradation by marine fungi, so the process only works at the ocean surface. In lab conditions, P. album degrades UV-treated plastic at a rate of approximately 0.05 percent per day over nine days, meaning it would take a significant amount of time to address the vast amounts of oceanic plastic waste.

But despite the slow degradation rate, the discovery of P. album is encouraging. Researchers believe that more plastic-eating organisms may exist, noting that marine fungi can decompose complex carbon-based materials and that other species likely contribute to plastic degradation as well. The plastic pollution crisis is by no means easy to solve, so any possible way to reduce garbage in our oceans is important, and the discovery of P.album could be the first step towards a new biological solution.

Spearheaded by Māori conservationist Mere Takoko and the Hinemoana Halo Ocean Initiative, the treaty aims to secure rights for whales, including freedom of movement, natural behavior, cultural expression including language and a healthy environment. Takoko emphasizes the cultural significance of whales as sacred ancestors to indigenous Polynesians, warning that without them, the marine ecosystem would collapse.

Whales are especially vulnerable to climate change and other threats like ship strikes, entanglement in fisheries, and noise pollution, because they are migratory. They also remove unwanted carbon from the atmosphere over the course of their lives and store it in their bodies. This adds to the environmental value of whales, but it also gives them an economic one with their worth in carbon sequestration estimated at $2 million each. Despite debates over the valuation of whale carbon and concerns about monetization, granting legal personhood to whales is seen as a vital step in their conservation. The ethical imperative of recognizing the intrinsic value and rights of non-human lives, echoes a global trend of conferring personhood on natural entities. Costa Rica, Panama, and Ecuador have granted personhood to bees, leatherback turtles, and nature itself, respectively. New Zealand and Bangladesh have extended personhood to rivers to safeguard their ecosystems.

Personhood is about visibility and accountability, and making whales legally visible can prevent their neglect. By granting whales personhood, this treaty therefore seeks to elevate their status, protect their habitats, and ensure their survival amidst mounting environmental challenges. Looking at nature this way and legally recognizing it as part of our society can hopefully encourage a paradigm shift, fostering a deeper understanding of our shared responsibility towards the preservation of our planet‘s diverse ecosystems.

In the Netherlands, an innovative project known as the Fish Doorbell has come up with a new way for humans to interact with aquatic life. Located in Utrecht‘s Weerdsluis lock, it combines technology, community engagement, and environmental conservation to aid fish migration during the spawning season. The Weerdsluis lock is a crucial point in a waterway system frequented by fish on their journey to spawn in the spring. However, during this time, the lock isn‘t frequently opened, posing an obstacle for migrating fish.

To address this issue, the Fish Doorbell was conceived. It consists of an underwater livestream camera positioned in the lock, allowing online viewers to monitor fish activity in real-time. The key feature of the Fish Doorbell is a digital button, which viewers can press when they spot fish on the livestream. Each time the button is pressed, it alerts the lock operator, who then assesses the situation and may decide to open the lock to facilitate the fish‘s passage. This not only reduces waiting times for the fish but also minimizes the risk of attacks by predators such as grebes and cormorants. The popularity of the Fish Doorbell has soared since its inception, with over 200,000 viewers tuning in during the first week alone. Interestingly, the majority of viewers come from outside the Netherlands, indicating widespread global interest in the project. This international community actively participates in the conservation effort by monitoring the livestream and ringing the doorbell when necessary. The project has fostered a sense of camaraderie among viewers, reminiscent of other popular nature livestreams, uniting them in a shared appreciation for aquatic life and a desire to protect it.

Overall, the Fish Doorbell project represents a creative and effective approach to conservation that harnesses technology and community engagement to benefit both humans and the natural world. As the project continues to evolve and expand its reach, it serves as a great example of how small actions can make a big difference in preserving our planet‘s biodiversity while spreading awareness at the same time. If you feel like looking for fish now, you should definitely check out the FISH DOORBELL LIVESTREAM , have fun ringing the bell!

The Larch combines the familiar with the modern. Aesthetics from the first sneaker era combined with a new design language create a sneaker with timeless style. The shoe was inspired by the concept of retrofuturism, which focuses on the image of the future that prevailed in the past and how we see it today.

Left: Larch Snow , Right: Larch Fiver Based on this principle, the idea was born to take various elements of old sneakers and modify them to create a new, modern design language. The result is remarkable, as since the first release of the Larch, the shoe has become an absolute ekn classic and an essential part of all collections.

Left: Larch Lightgrey , Right: Larch Blue Vegan With 25 different colorways currently available, the Larch proves its limitless versatility. Whether colorful, understated or monochrome, the sporty silhouette of this shoe loses none of its appeal. There is also a great variety of materials: from vegetable-tanned leather, recycled neoprene and recycled mesh to PETA-certified vegan leather, the Larch uses a wide range of sustainable materials.

Left: Larch Soil , Right: Larch Berry The Larch Soil marks a very special development, as the upper of this shoe contains our latest material innovation. The leather alternative, which bears the name Soil, represents a major step towards a more sustainable future, as it is completely biodegradable! It is made from just 3 ingredients: Natural rubber, viscose fibers and mushrooms, making it 100% vegan and organic.

Left: Larch Tallow , Right: Larch Giallo In addition to its timeless, sleek look and the many different colorways, the Larch is defined above all by its uncompromisingly high quality and comfort. These are the result of the elaborate manufacturing by hand by experienced shoemakers in our production facilities in Portugal. The Larch makes it impressively clear that a sustainable sneaker can easily meet all expectations of a fashionable shoe and at the same time give you the good feeling of having as little negative impact on the environment as possible.

Albania has taken a historic step in nature conservation by declaring the Vjosa River Europe‘s first wild river national park and placing an extensive area of 31,500 hectares under protection. The Vjosa River, which is considered one of the last large natural rivers in Europe, boasts an impressive biodiversity and is home to over 1100 animal and plant species, of which 13 animal and two plant species are classified as globally threatened by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The importance of the Vjosa lies not only in its rich ecological diversity, but also in the fact that there are no man-made obstacles such as dams or power stations, leaving the ecosystem largely undisturbed. This thriving habitat is home to various endangered species, including otters, the critically endangered Balkan lynx, whose population in Albania is estimated at 10 and only 40 in total, and the also endangered Egyptian vulture. The conservation measures will be carried out in two phases, with Phase I declaring the active river channel and associated areas, covering a total length of over 400 kilometers, a national park. It is expected that the management of this area will be fully operational by the beginning of 2024. In Phase II, the protected area will be extended to other free-flowing tributaries and regions that are of crucial importance to the river‘s ecosystem.

Albania aims to serve as a role model for biodiversity conservation and is proud to establish the first national park on one of Europe‘s last remaining wild rivers. By protecting the pristine beauty and ecological balance of the Vjosa, Albania hopes to inspire and encourage other governments around the world to adopt and implement similar conservation measures for their natural treasures.

Ebru Baybara Demir, a chef based in Mardin, Turkey, embodies a culinary journey that extends far beyond the art of cooking. Managing her restaurant, reviving ancient grains, and catering events beyond borders, she connects communities, including Syrian refugees, in a city steeped in diverse history.

Demir‘s culinary journey began by chance. When a group of tourists spurned the only restaurant in Mardin, she invited them to her aunt‘s home, sparking a lively communal dining experience. This encounter sparked a movement in which Demir got 21 unemployed women to open their homes to tour groups, which eventually culminated in the establishment of her restaurant, Cercis Murat Konaği. The restaurant injected much-needed economic vitality into an area grappling with high unemployment rates and inspired others in the community to open similar ventures, contributing to Mardin‘s tourism, which skyrocketed from a few thousand visitors annually to several million. Beyond her restaurant‘s commercial success, Demir delved into social gastronomy. In response to the Syrian war‘s impact on Mardin, she started to train locals and refugees in culinary arts, fostering unity and economic stability. Subsequently, she established an agricultural co-op engaging in diverse food production endeavors, from mushroom cultivation to soap-making. During the aftermath of the earthquakes in southern Turkey she started operating „soul kitchens“ that for six months straight prepared tens of thousands top-notch quality meals for disaster survivors.

Through her various initiatives she has made a huge contribution to the emancipation and empowerment of women in Mardin, evolving from a patriarchal culture to one of newfound opportunity and independence. The Daisy is our own version of a modern retro trainer, combining several elements of popular classics. We were particularly inspired by the unbeatable style that dominated the tennis courts and skate parks of our youth, which is why we have incorporated these nostalgic memories into the uncompromisingly sustainable design.

Left: Daisy White , Right: Daisy Berry Ever since the model was released in 2022, the Daisy family has grown steadily. We have developed new colorways and different material combinations, so that today there is a wide selection of styles made from either PETA-approved vegan textiles or chrome-free tanned leather.

Left: Daisy Pumpkin , Right: Daisy Soil And of course we also had to develop a Soil version of the Daisy. Made from just 3 ingredients, natural rubber, viscose fibers and mushrooms, our new leather alternative is not only vegan, but also organic and most importantly biodegradable. With a texture that is just like traditional leather, it perfectly rounds off the classic design of the shoe and shows that bio-based materials and sneakers simply go well together.

Left: Daisy Creme , Right: Daisy Lightgrey But even though we've had a lot of fun trying out new designs, the essence of the Daisy that makes it such a great and versatile sneaker has remained unchanged: nostalgia-inducing 80s styling with premium materials and unbeatable quality thanks to our sustainable production in Portugal!

Left: Daisy Tallow , Right: Daisy Nude Here, every pair is carefully made by hand by shoemakers with decades of experience. Their skill and attention to detail ensure that the Daisy not only stands for a timelessly cool look, but also for durability, quality and comfort.

The North Yorkshire village of Kirby Misperton was once a focal point for anti-fracking protests in the UK due to concerns about environmental damage and fossil fuel extraction. However, these protests led to success when the fracking was halted, resulting in an unused drilled well. But the site had potential for a new life by repurposing it for geothermal energy extraction.

Geothermal energy harnesses the Earth‘s internal heat, with the temperature rising approximately 30C for every 1,000 meters below the surface. By circulating water down a deep well and retrieving it, this process allows access to readily available hot water. The converted well in Kirby Misperton has the capacity to supply heat to approximately 300 homes, and there‘s potential for many more such wells across the UK and globally. The company that initially drilled the well and was previously involved in supplying gas and supporting fracking, has shifted its focus entirely towards clean energy. Despite lucrative opportunities in the gas industry, the company remains committed to geothermal energy after witnessing the positive community response to heating homes using this renewable source.

Local villagers express delight and optimism about the shift towards geothermal energy. They see it as a positive transformation that offers job opportunities and hope for a cleaner, sustainable future.

Almost a year after the release of the Larch Kamthala, we can now proudly look back on a number of prizes and honorable mentions. The great success of the shoe at various award ceremonies of the creative industry has now even led to the project making it to 8th place in the German ranking of all major campaigns. We are thrilled that our appeal to the fashion industry was met with such a positive response and that we were able to make a contribution to more equality and creative exchange.

After all, the Larch Kamthala is the most ambitious collaboration we have ever realized. Driven by the important message we want to convey with this project, everyone involved gave it their absolute best and remained undeterred by setbacks. The result is a sneaker and a campaign that specifically question the privileged attitude of the Western fashion industry while offering an innovative approach to a solution.

Our popular retro trainer Alder takes us back to the gyms of the 90s, with a sporty rubber sole and a design inspired by typical indoor sports. Its trademark eye-catching panel on the heel pays homage to classic handball shoes and blends seamlessly into the timeless look of the sneaker.

Check out the Alder White The story of this model begins in 2020 with the release of the Alder White, which can still be found in all of our collections today thanks to its timeless colorway. But the origins of the shoe actually go back much further. We have always admired the sneaker designs of the 80s and 90s. And so our aim with the Alder was to bring back some of that coolness while making it suitable for everyday wear.

Left: Alder Cacao , Right: Alder Creme Characterized by its high quality and sustainability, the Alder combines classic colorways with innovative materials for a retro-modern look. The styles are either made from vegetable-tanned leather or PETA-certified vegan materials and are all handcrafted in Portugal from locally sourced materials.

Left: Alder Soil , Right: Alder Ice For our new Alder Soil, we have given the classic a particularly modern look. The monochrome black colorway was made using our latest material innovation, Soil. This biodegradable and 100% vegan leather is completely organic and is made from just 3 natural ingredients: Natural rubber, viscose fibers and mushrooms.

Left: Alder Black , Right: Alder Tallow The high-quality craftsmanship of the Alder makes it clear that there are humans behind every shoe, whose skills must be appreciated accordingly. For this reason, the fair treatment and payment of the shoemakers in our production facilities in Portugal is our top priority. Their skills make the Alder a sneaker that is both visually and qualitatively impressive and has more than earned its status as an ekn classic.

A 14-year-old middle school student named Heman Bekele from Annandale, Virginia, has been recognized as „America‘s top young scientist“ for his innovative project aimed at treating melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer. Melanoma affects around 100,000 people in the United States annually, leading to approximately 8,000 deaths.

Bekele‘s submission was titled „Curing cancer, one bar of soap at a time,“ and he attributed his passion for biology and technology to his success. His groundbreaking idea involves creating a special soap, he simply calls „skin cancer treating soap,“ made from compounds that can reactivate dendritic cells responsible for protecting the skin and enable them to combat cancer cells. The inspiration for this project stemmed from Bekele‘s early life experiences in Ethiopia, witnessing people working under the sun. His goal was to develop a solution that would not only be scientifically significant but also accessible to a wide range of individuals.

Skin cancer, the most common cancer type, includes melanoma, which accounts for just 1% of cases but is responsible for the majority of skin cancer-related deaths. The American Cancer Society reports that melanoma rates have been on the rise, especially among women over 50, and it is more common among white people. Following his award win, Bekele aspires to turn his soap invention into a symbol of hope, accessibility, and a world where skin cancer treatment is readily available to all.

Researchers at Monash University have uncovered a groundbreaking discovery related to an enzyme known as Huc which is produced by bacteria that are often found in soil. The team led by Dr. Rhys Grinter, Ashleigh Kropp, and Professor Chris Greening discovered that this enzyme has the unique ability to generate electricity from the air.

Huc acts as a hydrogen gas scavenger, and what sets it apart from all other known enzymes and chemical catalysts is its capacity to consume hydrogen gas even when present at levels below atmospheric concentrations. In essence, Huc operates like a natural battery, producing a small electrical current from the air or introduced hydrogen. Prior to this finding, the scientific community was perplexed by the mechanism behind this process, making this discovery particularly noteworthy. The potential applications of Huc are diverse, but what might be most intriguing is its potential to power small electronic devices using air or low concentrations of hydrogen. This innovative approach would enable these devices to run on a clean and sustainable energy source. While extracting electricity from the small amount of hydrogen present in the air poses challenges, the researchers believe that, with sufficient quantities of Huc, the possibilities are vast.

Finally this research also has important implications for understanding Earth‘s processes. Many soil bacteria, especially in nutrient-deprived soils, have enzymes like Huc, which absorb hydrogen and impact the atmosphere, affecting climate. Studying this process could help stabilize climate in the future and open new opportunities for sustainable energy and environmental knowledge.

Tilos, a small Greek island located between Rhodes and Kos, has undergone a remarkable green revolution, achieving energy self-sufficiency and becoming the world‘s first zero-waste island. With just 745 residents, Tilos has set an inspiring example of sustainable living and environmental conservation.

Before the implementation of the Just Go Zero project, Tilos sent a staggering 87% of its waste to landfill sites. Thanks to the project‘s success, the island no longer has any rubbish bins, and the landfill site is permanently closed. In its place, the Centre for Creative Upcycling has emerged, where items are repaired, reused, or repurposed into raw art supplies or building materials. Polygreen, a Greek company specializing in circular economy solutions, played a pivotal role in overseeing and financing the project. Education was a critical component of their approach. They established an information center in the port to educate residents on proper waste sorting. Each household was provided with zero-waste equipment, including bins for recyclable and non-recyclable waste, a bag for organic waste, and a container for cigarette butts. Door-to-door waste collections were introduced across the island, with a smartphone app monitoring real-time recycling data for Polygreen.

In summary, Tilos stands as a beacon of environmental success, demonstrating how sustainable practices can harmoniously balance development and nature. With its energy self-sufficiency and zero-waste status, it serves as a remarkable example of responsible living and conservation, inspiring both residents and visitors alike to embrace a brighter and more resilient future.

Soil is not just a new fabric or colorway, for us it marks a huge step forward. For the first time in the history of ekn footwear we get to encorporate a fully biodegradable material into our shoes! Furthermore Soil is also 100% vegan, organic and made using only 3 natural ingredients: natural rubber, viscose fibers and mushrooms.

Check out the Daisy Soil Natural rubber is plays an important role in giving Soil the strength and durability necessary to be used in footwear. It is extracted from rubber trees in a way that does not damage the plant and allows for continuous harvesting. The features of natural rubber make it the perfect replacement for traditional materials, since it is water repellant and can easily be given any kind of texture to look and feel like leather.

Check out the Yucca Soil There are several reasons why mushrooms are also a key ingredient of Soil, the most important one being that they are a natural material, which is biodegradable. With similar properties to the natural rubber, the mushrooms can be used to replace some of it, which actively combats the waste of natural ressources. That‘s because all the mushrooms used for Soil are leftovers from the food industry, that are not suitable for selling and would otherwise be thrown away. Since they grow very easily, there is no need for fertilizers or other chemicals which means that the mushrooms are completely organic.

Check out the Larch Soil In order to be resilient enough for the tough requirements of footwear, the mix of natural rubber and mushrooms needs to be reinforced. This is done using viscose fibers, which are produced from wood that is sourced only from sustainable plantations. These regenerative, renewable and sustainably managed forests allow for a closed loop production process. In the latest episode of „Besser! So?“ (Better! Like this?), host Celine Fries explores the topic of how to treat sneakers better. She visited us in our store in Frankfurt for an interesting talk with our Managing Director Noel about how we develop sneakers at ekn and what we do differently in order to create eco-friendly shoes.

The two talk about Noel's career, from the sporting goods industry to working for a pioneer in the field of eco-textiles to the decision to start his own brand. After all, especially in the footwear industry, there are still huge deficits in the topic of sustainability that need to be overcome, a challenge that we have made our mission.

Using various ekn models, it is shown what we are doing differently than other brands when it comes to the choice of materials and the production conditions. Celine and Noel also address the cliché of eco-shoes and the image many have of them. Contrary to popular belief, sustainable sneakers can easily hold their own against mass-produced shoes. After all, good design doesn't depend on quantities and production conditions!

Finally, Noel shows our latest material innovation Soil, a biodegradable, vegan artificial leather, and explains how vegetable tanning works. Here we resort to traditional methods that are completely free of the heavy metals which are often used nowadays. We are excited to be a part of this show and to demonstrate to the audience that sustainable sneakers can be just as exciting and fashionable as mass-produced shoes. CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE EPISODE! After the overwhelming feedback that the Larch Kamthala has received from the community, we can now also celebrate a whole series of awards and prizes. We are happy and proud that the message we want to convey with this project has been so well received and has now also been awarded by several institutions. The campaign with which the Larch Kamthala was introduced was created in cooperation with the agency Accenture Song.

The ADC (short for Art Directors Club for Germany) is an independent association with the aim of finding and promoting excellent creative communication. At the annual ADC Awards, the Larch Kamthala campaign and the product itself won several awards. In total, the project won 2 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze awards, as well as 4 other awards.

At the international version of the ADC Awards, presented by the One Club for Creativity, the campaign around the Larch Kamthala also won 2 awards.

Every year, the German Digital Award honours creativity and innovation in the digital economy from German-speaking countries. We are delighted to have won silver twice for the "Designed in Bangladesh, Made in Europe" campaign.

The Larch Kamthala also scored at the Clio Awards. The Clios are an annual programme to recognise innovation and creative excellence in advertising, design and communication, judged by an international panel of advertising professionals. Here, the campaign won 1 silver and 2 bronze awards.

The Webby Awards are one of the most important awards for digital excellence. They are presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences and awarded annually. We are particularly proud to be an Honoree in the Best Cause Related Campaign category this year, in addition to a nomination.

D&AD represents the creative, design and advertising industries worldwide. The organisation also awards a coveted award with the Pencil. Our campaign was honoured here with 2 Pencils.

Furthermore, the Larch Kamthala was honoured with a very special award: the 3D DE&I WORK OF THE YEAR AWARD recognises work, individuals and organisations that are taking meaningful steps to create a more diverse, equitable and inclusive society. It is presented at the New York Festival, an international competition that aims to recognise the world's best achievements in the advertising industry.

Last but not least, we were honored by Bock auf Morgen with a particularly cute award: the Marketing for Future Award in Gold, which was presented in the form of a waving cat. The Marketing for Future Awards were created to honor cases that particularly stand for sustainability and positive change. We are therefore especially pleased that our campaign was awarded gold here.

Founded in autumn of 2022 with support from the city of Ansterdam and clothing brand Patagonia, United Repair Centre is a company worth talking about. Set up as a for-profit social enterprise they manage to bring together inclusion and circularity in a meaningful way. Each of their employees came to the Netherlands as an economic migrant or refugee and is now part of URC‘s mission of saving damaged clothing by repairing it. Most members of the team are from Syria, but there are also people from Ukraine, Russia, China and Iran among other nationalities. While some of them have experience at tailoring already, it is not mandatory with training courses being provided to those are new to this line of work. But United Repair Centre not just pays their employees fair wages, they also support them with legal advice, finding language courses and more.

We were deeply impressed by this company that manages to combine social and ecological sustainability in a way, that makes a real difference and serves as a great example in many ways. Check out their account @unitedrepaircentre to learn more about their great work.

In a recent study, scientists have made an astonishing discovery about the remarkable capacity of moss to absorb carbon dioxide. The research highlights that moss can store six times more CO2 than other plant species, positioning it as a vital player in combating climate change. Mosses survive by absorbing moisture from the air. In arid climates, their edges crumble inward, giving the impression of shriveling and dying. David Eldridge, an ecologist at the University of New South Wales, highlighted their extraordinary resilience, stating, „We‘ve taken mosses out of a packet after 100 years, squirted them with water, and watched them come to life. Their cells don‘t disintegrate like those of regular plants.“

Moreover, mosses appear to regulate plant pathogens effectively. Soil samples containing mosses exhibited a significantly lower pathogenic burden compared to those without mosses. This exemplifies how the interconnectedness of life functions and why it is important to value all living organisms, as even small, simple, and primitive life forms contribute to maintaining a healthy ecosystem.

Having been recognized as a British species since the time of King Charles II, the black-veined white was declared officially extinct in Britain in 1925. Nevertheless, to the surprise of naturalists and other observers, they have recently made an appearance in their preferred habitat of hawthorn and blackthorn trees on the outskirts of London. These medium-sized white butterflies stand out due to the distinctive black vein patterns on their wings.

Butterfly Conservation, an organization that monitors butterfly populations in Britain, assumes that these insects were likely released, although it remains unknown by whom and for what reason. They further noted that while it is delightful for people to have the opportunity to see these butterflies, it probably does not indicate a spontaneous revival of an extinct species.
Still, when we read this news, we had to smile at the fact that an animal that had disappeared for so long could suddenly reappear. Hopefully, the black-veined white butterfly has come to stay and become a part of the British ecosystem once again.

Retrofuturism is a recurring theme in our sneakers and a great influence on our design process. But how can it be described? The explanation is actually in the term itself - the image of the future that prevailed in the past and how we look at it from today‘s perspective. The medium of film probably captures the diversity of retrofuturistic visions best. That‘s why we asked our creative director Marek, an avid film lover, to name his three favorite films on the subject:

Brazil (1985) from Terry Gilliam „With its captivating ugliness and exaggerated scaling of dimensions that turns rooms full of filing cabinets into temples, Brazil creates a dystopian vision about class and meritocracy. Being a member of Monty Python, Terry Gilliam brings a similarly absurd humor to this movie.“

Akira (1988) from Katsuhiro Otomo „This legendary anime is an adaptation of the cult manga of the same name. Set in Neo-Tokyo, it shows us a very exciting version of the future with stunning images and animations. Full of amazing graphics, colors and interfaces, it creates its own unique vibe, reminiscent of Blade Runner, only much more colorful.“

Existenz (1999) from David Cronenberg „A movie about escapism and reality with some weird Cronenbergish practical effects. With its plot centered around a videogame whose device is a living organism, it offers a stark view on entertainment and technology. Brought to life and underlined by an amazing set design, Existenz creates a crazy dystopian world.“

Since the whole ekn footwear team is very passionate about music, we have decided to finally collect all our hidden gems, bangers and guilty pleasures in one playlist. Each member of our team will regularly contribute a few songs they‘re listening to, and you can enjoy the ever-growing library of different tunes. Today, Raphael from our design team kicks things off with three of his current favorites.

100 Gecs - The Most Wanted Person In The United States „When Hyper Pop started to become a thing, I never thought that I would actually enjoy it. But then I discovered 100 Gecs and they quickly changed my mind. This song is probably the most tame one from their latest album 10.000 Gecs, but it still makes me wanna laugh and dance at the same time.“

JPEGMAFIA x Danny Brown - Burfict! „Two underrated rappers that you either love or hate, rapping over an uncompromising instrumental with an extremely catchy trumpet sample. Danny Brown and JPEGMAFIA both bring their unique character and flows to this track, resulting in an absolute banger!"

Lord Folter - Asbest „For me Lord Folter is one of the most talented lyricists German rap, maybe even international rap, has ever seen. His way of playing with words while perfectly describing his dark, emotional thoughts is unmatched. Rest in Power!“
You can find the complete playlist here, have fun listening:

Who knew mushrooms could be so musical? Trained biologist Tarun Nayar has devised a technique that uses the electrical signals generated by mushrooms to create a unique form of music. Nayar connects small jump cables to the mushrooms to capture their bioelectric pulses. These are then amplified and processed through a variety of modular synthesizers to produce sounds, that can be manipulated and combined. His technique not only produces fascinating compositions but also demonstrates how living organisms can become creative tools.

Tarun Nayar‘s work, which he creates under the name Modern Biology, offers a new perspective on the relationship between humans and nature. It offers the opportunity to engage with the natural world in a way that is not exploitative, but focuses on developing a deeper understanding and appreciation for living organisms.
We are not only amazed by the listening experience, but also by the philosophy behind Nayar‘s work: He believes that staying connected with nature can help people overcome emotional struggles and hopes that his music, and art in general, will make it easier for people to understand the problems our planet is facing, inspiring them to make a change.

Tropical plants make up about one third of all plant species in this world, and are an important part of the ecosystem. Their variety of unusual colors, shapes and textures fascinates us so much that they have become the source of inspiration for our spring / summer 2023 collection.

Left: Tsuga Marble , Right: Liana Emerald Since the very first ekn shoe, we've named each of our models after a different tree, so it's only logical that our colorways also have their origins in the plant world. We are now happy to present our homage to nature and show you some of its beauty. In addition to ekn evergreens, there are numerous new styles to discover that bring the colorful diversity of the jungle straight to your feet.

Left: Larch Berry , Right: Argan Low Max Herre Tropical flora inspires us not only because of its diversity, but especially through the intensity of its colors. The color palette of the collection ranges from strong green to bright yellow to soft lilac tones and combines gradients with strong accents and colorblocking to reinterpret flowers, leaves and other plant shapes in this way.

Left: Argan Mid White , Right: Daisy Berry However, the rainforest and its plants are not only beautiful to look at, but above all worth protecting. As sustainability is the core value we don't compromise on, we pride ourselves on using only the highest quality, eco-friendly materials and sustainable production processes in the manufacture of our footwear. With the spring / summer 2023 collection, we maintain this commitment so you can enjoy both style and comfort while making a positive impact on our planet.

The Larch Kamthala is the largest and most meaningful collaboration we have realized so far. This collaboration at eye level between two completely different sides of our planet has come a long way with various ups and downs. We are all the more delighted that the project has been covered by several news portals and that Rokaiya Ahmed Purna has been given an additional platform.

Here you find Rokaiya's Interview with Forbes Rokaiya's unique design for this shoe was inspired by the Jackfruit and bears her unmistakable creative signature. With a multitude of details throughout the shoe, she has not only managed to create a stylish eye-catcher, but also tell a story through it.

Here you find the Article from Futurevvorld The Larch Kamthala was developed with the intention of turning common conventions and outdated thought patterns on their heads and is intended to benefit the person responsible for the unique design: Rokaiya Ahmed Purna. For this reason, 100% of the sales go to a creative hub in Dhaka, which was founded by her, and which specifically supports young designers.

Here you find the Article from Business Punk The inspiration for the shoe was jackfruit, the national fruit of Bangladesh, the colors and patterns of which can be found in a variety of ways on the upper, lining, sole and even the laceplate of the Larch Kamthala.

Here you find the Article from Lilli Green The Kamthala is a bold, creative statement to the industry to rethink its treatment of the Global South: it is an appeal to the fashion industry to stop inhumane manufacturing practices in developing countries and to also promote the creative output of talent outside the industrialized world.

Here you find the Article from The Daily Star For those who want to be a part of this movement as well as have a unique sneaker, the limited edition Larch Kamthala is available exclusively in our shop.

In the recent episode of "Das Gleiche in Grün", a German TV show about sustainability, host Donya Farahani explores the topic of eco-friendly sneakers. For her research she visited us in Frankfurt to talk to our CEO Noel and Creative Director Marek about how we at ekn develop sneakers, that are as sustainable as possible.

During Donya´s visit in our showroom in Frankfurt, Noel explains how his love for skateboarding got him into shoes and how after working for German eco fashion brand hessnatur, he set out to create sneakers that are stylish and highly sustainable at the same time.

Over the course of the following talk with Marek they discuss the limitation of materials, which comes from our high requirements towards material quality. We find this challenge especially exciting. In addition, new vegan materials like the frottee lining of our Daisy or the fake lambskin, that is shown in the report, have a much higher appeal for us.

Donya and Marek also talk about the topic of durability. Since this is a very important feature for us, we make sure that our shoes are built with excellent workmanship to last especially long. Our models are also made to be resoled, so a worn out shoe can still have a second life. We are very happy to be part of this report and to show the viewers, that sustainable sneakers can be just as exciting and stylish as mass produced shoes.

                <![CDATA[
When we read the term „crepe“, most of us probably think of a very thin pancake garnished with sugary delicacies, that you can get at the fair. With the German way of spelling „Krepp“, a roll of masking tape or a selfmade school cone will manifest itself before the inner eye of most people. It has almost been completely forgotten by now, that this word also stands for a whole type of textiles. In the context of fashion, crepe denotes a woven fabric with a coarse surface, which is mostly matt due to its structure. Depending on the production it gets its texture from the use of strongly overtwisted yarn and a specific weaving technique. Chiffon or crepe-satin are some of the many subcategories of crêpe. But the term is also used for another material: soles made from natural rubber.

Success story of a natural material In the western world Crepe soles first appeared in the forties of the 20th century. At this point the indigenous tribes of middle america had already been using the material for thousands of years to make clothes weather-resistant; as a result European colonial powers exported the plants necessary for production to Africa and Asia. During the second world war the soldier Nathan Clark¹, who coincidentally is also the heir to a footwear empire, brings home a raw version of the desert boot from an Indian stationing. The robust boot helps the company get back on track – and provides a fashion statement to generations of teenagers. Crepe: sole of subcultures The rockabillys of the fifties either present themselves with blue suede shoes, that were immortalized by Elvis, or in extravagant creepers, which stand out because of their especially thick sole. This is where the crepe sole even becomes political: In 1954 a ministry in Prague allegedly orders the production of the western-influenced footwear to be stopped². British mods, American students and German 68s are united not just by the pioneering spirit of the sixties, but also by the thin, light soles of the desert boots. At the latest in the sixties demand for the natural material increases significantly; among others Vivienne Westwood and the London punk scene discover the crepe sole for themselves. The competition through synthetic alternatives increaes consequently, since their production and logisitics are cheaper and there is less fluctuation caused by nature. But at ekn we still use natural rubber with great enthusiasm. Crepe x ekn Models like the desert boot Pear or the Max Herre Signature get their raw, earthy charme from their crepe soles, but we find crepe especially hot because of its heat-regulating properties. As a natural product rubber reliably adapts to ambient temperature; so do not be surprised if the sole of your boots feels harder during winter and softer during summer. But rubber does not only harmonize perfectly with its environment when the shoe is worn. Extraction and production are sustainable as well with short supply chains.

Rubber: a pretty perfect natural product Crepe has always been made from the juice of rubber trees. In its natural form it is a milky latex liquid, that is harvested from the tree by making fine cuts and collecting it in buckets. This process does not harm the tree; actually it develops new shoots as a result and simply reproduces the sticky juice. During further steps of production the liquid is thickened, similar to the processing of milk in cheese production. With the help of a specific acid the latex-milk curdles. The resulting rubbery mass is put into a press before it gets dried to form sheets, which now have the typical amber color of the final product. Air bubbles, that are enclosed during drying later work as natural cushioning. The grippy sole can already be punched from the finished sheets. If the trees are not grown in monocultures, but sustainably integrated into their surroundings and if for instance biodegradable formic acid is used for coagulation, the extraction of natural rubber is mostly harmless for the envirmonment. Crepe is also a sustainable investment for you: if you have worn out the sole of your shoe, you can replace it with our crepe spare sole set .

Crepe sole: desert boots, creepers and more To be fair one should consider, that even a product, which was almost perfectly designed by nature has its weak spots. Due to their porosity rubber soles are relatively vulnerable to dust, lint and staining. For fans of the cult product this is part of the charm, and only the patina really makes the crepe sole presentable. We wholeheartedly stand by our crepe soles and feel reassured in our mission during every inspection and quality control of the material: sustainable natural products are no anomaly, they rather deserve a fixed place in global production- and trade-chains. After all they have already been part of fashion enthusiasts´ wardrobes for almost 75 years. Photos by Tim Peukert

Robert Winter is a travel- and music photographer based in Cologne. For about a year now, he’s been doing photoshoots for ekn. In this interview, he tells us about his beginnings in the hip hop scene, working for big agencies, personal idols, and his indie magazine called Passing Me By. You have been shooting photos for ekn for about a year. How did this collaboration come about? Pretty organically, to be honest. I met Marek and with my relatively large network of musicians, it wasn’t a big deal for me to go: “Hey, put on this shoe, while you’re at it”, whenever I’d do shootings. I do have quite a few contacts, especially here in Cologne. Record stores, bars, you name it. All of those are great spots and motives for the kind of everyday situations that I shoot for ekn.

Picture 1: Robert in LA at the video shoot for Masego & Ta-Ku, Picture 2: Donut store "Dilla's Delights" of Uncle Herm, the uncle of J Dilla
Your pictures have a very distinct vintage look. Do you shoot analog or digital? I come from analog photography, but for corporate shootings that’s just become too expensive. When you have a client saying: “We’d like another perspective for this one, can we get a couple more versions of that one?”, the numbers just don’t add up. Analog film has become so expensive, when you factor in development and everything you easily end up with one photo costing one euro to produce alone. That’s why I switched to digital a while ago. That said, I’m not a clean, high-end product photographer, my style isn’t polished like that of photos you’d find in some glossy catalog. Which is a good match for the people I photograph and also for ekn of course. Those pictures aren’t polished either. You can have a guy looking real weird in one shot, and someone else with a cigarette still in hand in the other – all that kinda stuff you normally wouldn’t want in advertising. Not just ekn, a lot of brands have renounced that sort of catalog aesthetic. We live in an age where corporations don’t want to be perceived as such but rather as that cool friend living right across the street. Exactly. That’s why the whole music thing fits so well. What I’m good at is creating an atmosphere where people are cool and relaxed, where they behave naturally. That’s also what works best with musicians. Those guys aren’t models. And I speak their language, I move naturally in their world. I don’t know shit about fancy marketing- and IT slang. In that kind of context, I’d never be able to create that same, familiar vibe. That’s also why I think it’s pretty rad that the pictures I take for ekn are just kind of normal actually. The guys I have in front of my lens are pretty much just regular dudes. Just a little funky.

Picture 3: Cosplay festival in Osaka, Picture 4: Train ride to St. Petersburg, Picture 3: Anglers on the shore of the Bosporus
You started out as a musician yourself. What did you do back then? Rap. There’s this production company I have with two good buddies – we used to do a lot of those more corporate type jobs together. Back in the day, we spent a lot of time sitting in a basement making beats. Getting absurdly high and making beats (laughs). An excellent wellness treatment in these trying times. Yes! Especially last year these gatherings took place a lot. What was your segway into music photography, hip hop? How did you find that side of you? Pretty much. We were 16 or 18. Someone played a show, so you needed flyers. The question arose: “Who can take a picture for that?” Or you released a CD, burnt at home as one did back then. For that you needed a booklet and so on. That’s basically how I started designing covers, first for my own crew, then for other ones from the area. That kinda took on a life of its own. At some point, I wasn’t even all that hyped about making music myself anymore and started taking much more interest in this whole design aspect… Which I guess is due to the fact that I was into graffiti even before I started rapping (laughs). I’m so old, to me rap was still part of this triad consisting of graffiti, rap… And breakdance. Exactly! We basically sat in our rooms all day and doodled all sorts of tags and pieces and whatnot. There was always this visual, artistic component to it. Looking back, I guess that’s just what manifested over all these years. So you’re saying the transition to photography was an organic one that came with time. Or was that a conscious choice, you saying: “Yupp. That’s it. In reality, it was much worse than that (laughs). I started with photography because my ex-girlfriend found a camera at the bar she worked at back then. It was one of the first digital cameras of the time and apparently someone just left it there. I hope that guy is really mad now, but he kinda also never came back to ask for it. As for me, I was still drawing at that time. However, this was in an era where people would start digitizing their graffiti, creating fancy backgrounds in Photoshop and so on. I then started photographing structures, using them as fills for the letters and experimenting with that. At some point I switched to just taking pictures. That was something I fell in love with very early on: reality. As I said, I’m not exactly good at staging photos. People like Dave LaChapelle who creates these insanely huge, staged photos, I could never do stuff like that. I just can’t imagine things like that upfront. But when I’m outside, just strolling around, I get so excited in my head, I permanently go: “Wow, what’s that? Look at this, that corner looks sick.” Driving my present wife nuts of course because I take her out on walks so much but that’s just what comes naturally for me (laughs). It’s not that I particularly focused on photography, I just kinda stopped doing everything else, you know what I mean? I can’t even watch regular shows anymore, instead, I have some documentary on almost 24/7. Some travel documentary, Russia from above or what have you. It’s pretty much the same with photography: The only thing I can do is to just go out, see things, and then take pictures. That’s also how the idea for Passing Me By came to life. I just go someplace and simply capture what I see. And I go out looking for that kind of normality.

Picture 7: Subway station in Moscow, picture 8: old home of J Dilla. Among others he has produced there: Erykah Badu, Common, Mos Def and Slum Village.
Passing Me By – what’s that all about? The whole thing started from within the hip hop cosmos again. I was in Detroit back then, in 2016. I had just shot a music video and designed a cover for Illa J, J Dilla’s little brother. I was there for a week. Illa didn’t have a whole lot of time, but I did. So I just started walking around and the city just blew my mind. You know, when General Motors was still there Detroit really embodied this American way of life we know from the movies. Then GM leaves and so do the people. Nowadays it’s just insane, the city looks like every second home is either abandoned or burnt down. That’s being crass of course. But then Detroit is also home to Motown, Eminem, Illa J, Detroit Techno later on. One can really tell that this blue collar context but also this lack of perspective have fuelled so much awesome stuff culturally. I instantly knew I wanted to stick around for longer. Most of the time I just walked around. It’s crazy how photogenic that country is. I mean if you look at it from above, the city looks like crap, but when you truly look, you’ll find a bazillion corners that’ll make you go: “Whoa, that just looks amazing, this place could be straight out of a movie.” That’s how I strolled around town like a crazy person for a week, then I came back and thought to myself: “Okay, cool. Got a couple pictures of Illa J. But I also have these 500 other photos that are pretty rad.” I then spoke to the people at Carhartt, who had financed the Illa J shooting. They really dug the photos and said to me: “Why don’t you go again, do a fashion shoot with Illa, but this time you stay for two weeks and just do your thing.” That trip produced so much material, I couldn’t possibly have left it to rot on my hard drive, so I just turned it into a magazine. Just photos, that’s it. A mini-vacation for at home, if you will. Shared apartment toilet reading material (laughs). The whole thing was so much fun and people liked it so much that I did it again next year. I went to Tokyo and Honshu and just did the same thing. Take walks, let yourself get carried away. I walk between ten and twenty kilometers a day that way. By now, I produce and distribute the magazine all by myself. For the next edition, we’re going to Istanbul with ekn.

Sounds like a dream job. Do you do anything else other than that? (laughs) Well, I can’t live off the magazine of course. It’s rather that I’m making money selling prints of photos from the magazine. People write to me saying they liked this and that picture and that they’d like to hang it up on a wall at home. The magazine itself is more of a catalog in that sense. That said, seeing as the magazine is doing so well, I did manage to turn down a few jobs from the agency world. In the end though, the problem is this: Everyone can be bought. There’s just so much freaking money in advertising, it’s straight up uncomfortable how much you can make. The flipside is that you end up with clients like Nestlé or Shell (laughs). I mean I’d never work for those guys, but you know what I mean! That’s where I feel very lucky to be able to stay independent to a degree and survive doing, let’s call it, craftwork.

Picture 9: POV Martin a.k.a. V Raeter is photographed by Robert. In the background a photo of Martha Cooper (Robert's idol) Picture 10: Illa J in the legendary Melodies & Memories - where Common, Eminem and J Dilla bought their sample records.
Sustainable fashion with ekn. Is that a workaround you can live with? An existence, not in complete asceticism, but in a way where you don’t feel like you have to sell your soul or even the entire planet? Absolutely. I mean of course the best case scenario would be everyone just buying my stroll photos and me being able to pay the rent from that. But then again, I’d probably think to myself: “You’re such a dick, Robert. Just because you saw some dude walking down the street that you thought looked funky, who, in reality, might have had a really shit day, you took a picture of him. Now he looks real sad in it. Someone reads something into it, wants it for his home, and orders a print, but in the end you’re still kind of making money on that guy’s back.” It’s sort of a holistic chain in the end. I’m fully aware that I need to do a little bit of work at some point. That I need to spend some time doing things I normally wouldn’t have. Looking at it like that, I think it’s pretty cool that I can do the new shirts with ekn, it has more of a message that way. I mean I’m not doing them with H&M. You said that you were looking for normality, that your style is very documental. Do you think the success of Passing Me By has something to do with the fact that a lot of people are looking for something “real” in a world where everything can be accessed at all times and feels artificial a lot of the time? Funny you should say that. I certainly do. And this accessibility is also what feeds into a certain boundlessness. A lot of people don’t know what’s right and what’s wrong anymore, what they like and what they don’t like. It’s the same thing even with trends: We don’t really have those anymore, globally speaking. Nowadays, we basically only get niche trends within specific bubbles. Speaking of bubbles: Who are your biggest influences, artistically? Martha Cooper from the U.S. She basically invented hip hop photography, to exaggerate a bit. In terms of travel photography, I’m gonna go ahead and say Ara Güler, that’s a street photographer from Istanbul who really left his mark on black and white photography over there. And then I’d like to also mention a French guy – Jesus, let me look up the correct pronunciation real quick: Henri Cartier-Presson. When I transitioned from drawing to photography, I looked at a ton of old black and white photos and I completely lost myself in his works. Your current favorite camera and lens? Street photos I do with a Leica and a 35mm lens. For everything I do for ekn, I work with a Hasselblad X1D, the first portable, digital, medium format camera. Also using a 35mm lens. And your favorite ekn shoe? I really dig the Alder. And I have the Low Seed in black. Really sleek and very comfy, can’t go wrong with that one.
Max Röbel interviewed Robert for us. Thank you very much!

Whether trainers, ballet shoes, boots, sandalettes, loafers or high heels: the Germans love shoes, and they love buying shoes. Every German owns an average of around 15.25 pairs of shoes. This was calculated in 2017 by a survey on behalf of TextilWirtschaft – not including sports shoes and slippers. Despite the claustrophobic conditions in German shoe cupboards, the half-life of our shoes rarely extends to more than one or two seasons. There are various reasons for this.
Although once a purely protective measure, shoes today have long since advanced to become a fashion item. Their manufacture is therefore subject to exactly the same cycles as those in which large clothes retailers rotate their collections, to provide us with items that are updated to remain on trend, sometimes at weekly intervals. Those who stroll through the city centre wearing “it” pieces on their feet today may already have difficulty putting together a fashionably acceptable outfit tomorrow – unless they diligently buy replacements.

At the same time, most mass-produced shoes no longer offer what their handmade siblings used to promise: many years of robustness, protection from wind and weather, warmth and breathability – with proper care, even for a whole lifetime. With the advent of factories, thermoplastics and especially cheap gluing methods in the 20th century, shoes rapidly evolved from being companions to disposable items. This does not mean that rubber soles are to be pilloried. Above all, it comes down to the quality of the materials used and their correct handling: stitched soles last longer than glued; organic materials such as real leather or cotton are generally more breathable than synthetics such as PVC or polyethylene. These differences are generally also reflected in the price. Shoes from discount stores often cost only around five euros to produce, as Tobias Börner from Shoepassion reports in an interview . By contrast, these days, future wearers of a fitted shoe are happy to spend sums over € 1,000. To start with – however much you love long durability – you have to be able to afford this, especially as a single pair will generally not get you far: if you turn up to a funeral in trainers, you risk unsympathetic looks, and even the finest fitted slippers will not withstand a weekend in ankle-deep festival mud. In addition, there are occasions such as work (which requires different footwear depending on your job), sports and hobbies, as well as changing weather conditions. At best, wearing the same pair every day will ensure faster wear; at worst it will ruin not only the shoes but also your feet.

So, how many pairs of shoes do you really need? As with so many things in life, there is – of course – no universal answer here, and opinions differ on the internet too. From two to twenty: all views are represented – in turn, with a weary smile, collectors and resellers are probably shaking their heads at such pathetic numbers. Nonetheless, some attempt at a list should be made at this point. Clearly, first and foremost, it is better to have two favourite pairs of shoes for everyday use. The important factors here are function and wear comfort. Obviously, the fashion aspect must not be neglected, but it is of secondary importance in this case. Those who choose a timeless design here (loosely based on the principle of “leather jacket, jeans and T-shirt”) also have nothing to fear even from major trend changes in the world of fashion. Ideally, you should alternate between your favourite shoes every day, to reduce the strain on the other pair. This will mean, with proper care, the shoes will last longest.
In second place, we should mention your “good shoes”: this is a pair for formal occasions, such as weddings, funerals or going to the opera. Ideally, they should go with your suit or with the dress you wear most often on such occasions. These are followed by a pair for each different season: sturdy winter boots for a trip in the snow and ice, and a pair of airy sandals or slip-ons for the summer. Then, in the minimalist shoe cupboard, there is still space for a pair of special shoes. They may be running shoes for your evening circuit of the park, wellington boots for mudflat hiking, or handmade crocs for the stage. Work shoes are not included in the score and count as extra. Altogether, this makes five or six pairs of shoes. That may not be the right number for everyone and, depending on your lifestyle, you may well need either more or fewer. But, at least for the everyday challenges of life, you should be armed with this standard kit. What about proper care though?

This naturally depends firstly on the material from which the shoes are made. Patent leather shoes are not the same as trainers, and suede is not the same as cotton. However, there are a few almost universal basics to mention at this point: 1. Open the laces. Even if it is sometimes more convenient: when slipping the shoes on and off, those who leave the laces done up place a huge strain on the material. Instead, it is better to take the time to undo the laces – it is definitely worth it in the long run. 2. Have breaks from wearing them. Shoes that are worn every day absorb more moisture and break more quickly. A 24-hour break from wearing them after work will ensure that they are properly aired and will help the material to maintain its shape. Equally: 3. Use a shoe stretcher. Even during short breaks, shoes that are not being worn tend to lose their shape or to form unsightly creases. A miracle shoe stretcher will counter this. Professional tip: Wooden shoe stretchers are particularly good at absorbing moisture, preventing mustiness therefore also protecting the material. 4. Dry your shoes carefully. Even after you have finished your woodland walk in the stream: please do not blow-dry your shoes or place them on a radiator, as this will cause the material to warp and make it brittle. Instead, it is better to stuff them with newspaper and leave them to dry at room temperature. Beyond these basic rules, if you invest in good quality, in the right care for the relevant material and in repairs, you will be able to enjoy your carefully chosen collection for many years to come.

Droughts in the Amazon, forest fires in California and vanishing glaciers – climate catastrophes are now happening all over the world. Global warming is undeniable. Wasteful production methods and excessive consumption are not just harming our planet; they are also the cause of social inequality. We need to ask ourselves: what can we do?

Back in 2016, the Paris Agreement laid the foundations for global action against climate change, but we remain a long way from the targets set. The Fridays For Future movement demands no more and no less than the implementation of those long-agreed objectives. The fact that millions of people are now demonstrating as part of this global movement hints at a new attitude, and an optimism to overcome the crisis.

The world needs a rethink: sustainability is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity in the 21st century. Consumers are looking for products that have been produced in a sustainable and socially responsible way. EKN was founded back in 2013 with the aim of developing a brand dedicated to precisely this need. We ensure that our products are sustainably produced, last a long time and that those producing them are paid a fair wage. Thus, we are doing our best to contribute to the triad of climate and environmental production, economy and social justice.

Modern technology must be developed in harmony with humanity and nature. The ever-present fear of a lack of resources is both crippling and fatalistic – it should be replaced with optimism and resourcefulness. We need to step into our future with awareness, so that we can move away from the inequality of excess consumption and towards a better life for everyone. Humanity is not a parasite; it is a natural part of our planet. We need to stand up and take responsibility.

A move from “more” to “better”: we don’t want to be part of the problem any more – we want to be part of the solution. A future that is compatible with our planet does not need to be based on doing without. By making conscious decisions, we can free ourselves from harmful excess. We are the change that we want to see in the world. (Gandhi)

Producer, DJ, graphic designer, photographer, illustrator, designer and coffee drinker – Martin, aka. V.Raeter, is all this and more. The all-rounder from Berlin designed the “Mascot” T-shirt for us. In an interview, he talks about inspirations and how he works, about his inner child and his love of Adventure Time.

You have been a DJ and producer for over 20 years. What is it that still excites you? I am always pleased every time I have created something that I like. Producing is a nerd thing. My music is based on samples. You find one thing and then another, and you keep digging deeper. New worlds keep opening up. If you love it, you will always keep doing it. Obviously the business part can spoil the pleasure, especially in the world of hip hop. I make music for myself, because I have to do it. That means positive feedback is so much nicer. In an interview with ALL GOOD, you said that the line “Real Rhymes, not your everyday hologram” from MF DOOM is often a motto for your work. Why? It’s just about doing things differently, finding new approaches. I come from a time when it was extremely important to have your own style. If you were wearing the same shoes as the next guy, you weren’t cool. Today, the music of successful producers often sounds very similar, whether Trap of Lo-Fi. It’s a generation type beat. For me, the biggest compliment is if someone says: “That sounds like you.” Are you a nostalgic person? I don’t think so. I try to be in the ‘now’, to react positively to things. Not everything was better in the past; not everything was worse. Recently, I have caught myself thinking back to old times. I do have a fairly long journey behind me. Everything that happens feels like a new success. If something special happens, I often think: “Wow! Now things are really picking up.” That’s how it has been for over 20 years now. What is your fondest memory? There are many moments I remember that put a smile on my face. For example, I was in New York in September 2019 and it was a brilliant time – fantastic, positive energy and I still draw on that. But, like I said: I am happy every time something new happens. The climax is not here yet. How did you get into drawing? I started drawing as a child. It’s the easiest thing; all you need is pencil and paper and then everything is calm. I drew things that I thought were cool – for example, the Peace Race, bicycles. But we also had West German television; I saw Star Trek and Batman there and I painted the characters. As a child, what was your greatest dream? I remember pretty well that, at some point, I realised my best friend’s father was a graphic designer. That was in year 3. Suddenly I became aware that you can earn money from drawing. Before that, I always saw work as something not fun. That’s when I knew I wanted to follow this career.

Which cartoons have travelled with you for a long time? Star Trek also existed as an animated series and I still find that cool, even now. I have a heart for science fiction. For me, Adventure Time is a perfect series; I love all the characters – I find them inspiring but also troubling. Sometimes I can’t watch it, as it’s too good. On the surface, Adventure Time is a children’s series but it is brought to life by the details, jokes and references that children don’t understand at all. What are the similarities between producing and illustration? You’re composing something, making a collage of various references and associations. I bring things together and use them to tell a new story; likewise with cooking. For me, it’s all the same: a dish made of various ingredients. Whether you like it is ultimately a question of taste. All these areas also play with height and depth, whether sound waves or flavour nuances or gradation curves. I love designing. Anthropomorphism is a recurring element of your drawings. Why does this form of character depiction play a central role in your work? I have no idea where that comes from. There must have been an inspiration for it. I think it’s good that it breaks up the characters. It has a cuteness, like Japanese cars with headlights that have to look friendly. I try to maintain a childish nature, not to be grown up but rather to see the world like a child. As a child, there are no rules. When you draw, anything is possible. That’s why I can put trousers on a dog. Those who follow you on Instagram, will frequently see painted takeaway coffee cups. Do you keep them all? Yes. I do also give some away, but only if it happens in the situation. There have even been exhibitions with the cups. I like the cups, because I can design freely there. The pictures stand entirely on their own and hold little surprises, like when the hand in a trouser pocket comes out of an ear. Takeaway culture is generally important to you, even if your song titles can be seen on “Alltimers”. What is the fascination for you here? The white cup is a great canvas to draw on. It’s obvious to me that it’s not a sustainable concept, but what I do with the cups is upcycling. I still have loads of unpainted cups at home and I keep those too. They have to be used. Because I’m generally out and about a lot and I run a lot, I often come into contact with takeaway products, like the curried sausage just now.

What were the first trainers you bought for yourself? Do you still remember? The first trainers that I really saved for were Adidas Forum Low, with a Velcro fastener and light blue stripes. I bought them in 1998 and they cost 240 marks. I still celebrate those shoes today – there was never a re-issue in that design. I wore them until I went through the soles. Your absolute basic is a white T-shirt, isn’t it? I think white T-shirts are great. As a child, I always wore shirts. But the white T-shirt is also a good base for drawings. T-shirts with a print certainly have a statement factor; it’s very easy to get messages across with them in a very striking way, like an advertising pillar. The perfect example is the WALK CLEAN lettering on the ekn mascot shirt, which I designed. How did that collaboration come about? I have known Marek Bäuerlein for a long time and I was really pleased when he approached me with the idea. He wanted this cheeky acorn, and I was ecstatic. I have been watching ekn for a long time and I think it’s really cool that Marek has ended up with them. They’re showing courage there and taking an edgy path. When I was asked to design a shirt, I was on board immediately. Do you have a favourite ekn product? Yes: the keysleeve that I’m carrying now, in yellow. When I saw it, I immediately thought it was great. And then I thought: “Do I really need it?” Since I’ve had it, I’ve used it all the time. TOP 5 PHOTOGRAPHERS Evelyn Hofer Arnaud Montagard Rachelle Mendez Robert Winter Phil Penman TOP 5 PRODUCERS Dexter Tom Doolie Flako Farhot Josi Miller TOP 5 ILLUSTRATORS Mawil Elsa Klever Dave McKean Gipi F.K. Noel Klein-Reesink – our boss. He founded ekn back in 2012 as a passion project. But his passion for style and sustainability goes back long before then. In this interview, he talks about the first pair of shoes he bought, hedonistic sustainability and his work experience at the brand’s Portuguese production sites.

When did your fascination with shoes begin? The brand Titus was a really big deal in Münsterland where I grew up. Everyone used to skateboard. Even me, and I tried really hard. Getting sponsored is like the holy grail of skateboarding. I managed it – a shop gave me free shoes and skateboards. My job was to give feedback on how they could be improved. We took it very seriously: we looked really closely at the products, sawed through shoes to see what was inside. It sparked my interest.
You went to the US after your A-levels. Did you have any experiences there that still stick with you to this day? I wanted to get out of my home town. I lived in Washington DC and New York. I skateboarded a lot. I worked in a café in Brooklyn – they had a big focus on organic produce and sustainability. Back then, the environmental movement in Germany was really focused on cutting back – on pointing the finger, in an altruistic way of course. In Germany, organic food had a bad reputation and didn’t taste good. But it was completely the opposite in New York. I realised that sustainability could be fun and enjoyable. Lots of artists used to frequent the café. Erykah Badu got her coffee there; the person who created the cookie monster used to pop in each day. Organic food was a big topic and it made an impact on me.
How did you get started in the fashion business? I worked in a shop during my time as a student in Münster. Lots of the customers ran marathons, did triathlons, etc. In these types of shops, shoes are adapted to perfectly meet the needs of the athletes. Using treadmill analysis, gait analysis and different types of soles. I wanted to properly understand it all. So, I attended courses on Biomechanics at university. I started to run marathons and worked for New Balance and Adidas. During this time, I was often asked about the manufacturing conditions and sustainability of the shoes, but the only response that I was ever able to give was a shrug of the shoulders. All this changed when I moved to Hess Natur. The company, which is based in North Hesse, sells organic textiles and was responsible for setting many of the standards that we are familiar with today. Before then, I always used to think that I could either do something good but with a low wage or work for a huge company and earn lots of money. My time at Hess Natur showed me that sustainability and economics can go hand-in-hand. It was a pivotal moment for me.
How did you put this realisation into practice? I started a blog on sustainability and business with a colleague. We both found the “LOHAS” movement (Lifestyle of Health and Sustainability) completely fascinating. We connected with people across Germany and even held a conference for businesses on the issue in Frankfurt. The number one question we were asked: “How can we make sustainability cool?”. While we were reflecting internally, the eco-revolution had already taken place. Now there are organic supermarkets on every street corner. I made many contacts during this time, including in the field of young fashion. In the end, I wanted to escape this niche. I thought: “If you want to make a difference, you have to take action yourself”. My expertise was in the shoe business and, when it comes to sustainability, this field was lagging behind, and still does. That was the inspiration behind ekn.

I can tell that you are really passionate about sustainability. Was there a turning point for you? During my time working in the eco-sector, I spoke to a cotton farmer from Burkina Faso. I asked him what had changed for him since switching to organic cotton. He told me that healthy children were once again being born in his village. Lots of pesticides are used in the conventional cotton industry. There is no protective clothing and people live close to the fields. They are permanently exposed to the poisons. No chemical pesticides are used in the production of organic cotton. I was completely blown away by this reply from the farmer. It made me realise the impact that the textile industry’s decisions have on the lives of individuals. Sustainable fashion is worth fighting for.

What were the first steps you took in setting up ekn? A former designer from Adidas helped me to design the first products. I used the community I had established to reach out to sustainable production companies. I spent a month in Portugal, where we produce our shoes, and got to know the factories – a bit like work experience. I wanted to understand how a shoe is made. From the shoelaces to the leather to the shoe boxes – I saw the development of my shoe first hand. By the time I came back to Germany, I had a small collection of samples in place. My time in Portugal proved to me that I was doing the right thing. In the conventional shoe industry, leather is tanned with heavy metals and the water that leaves these factories is contaminated. In our factories we use plant-based dyes. The water that leaves our factories is of drinking water quality. After the tanning process, the water is used to irrigate the surrounding fruit trees. I love this concept. The production is more expensive and takes longer but it is totally worth it.
How did you sell your first shoe? A really good friend of mine, Aki Tuncer, helped me a lot. Tuncer is the sales director of a sustainable Danish clothing brand, Knowledge Cotton Apparel. He took me to his showrooms and allowed me to display my shoes next to his clothing. Meeting his customers was worth its weight in gold. It allowed me to sell my first shoes. I managed to gain ten customers at once – it was a great success.
Did you have other experiences that fell on deaf ears? Of course, there was also negative feedback – the standard response to new ideas is rejection. Any German trying to enter the shoe business is generally laughed at. Needless to say, the designs weren’t perfect. I had to work to gain credibility. During the first few years, I worked as a business consultant. I earned money by day and worked on the ekn brand at night. Self-exploitation remains a big part of my work!

When did you decide to fully focus on ekn? In 2017, I decided to push on with the ekn project. I loved the brand and saw great potential in ekn. The project sparked a fire in me and so I went all-in. As an entrepreneur, I am always worried about failure, but the last few years have shown me that courage is worth it. You invest your own money in the production and then hope that you can sell the shoes at the end of it. The risks can be pretty nerve-racking. My first successes were a result of my enthusiasm and my passion for the brand. ekn is and will always be a passion project.
How has ekn changed over the years? It is in a permanent state of change. When I founded the company, I only had one employee – we even did the logistics ourselves. We had a small warehouse in Offenbach and we created a rather informal online store. We did it all ourselves. We had to become more agile and that led to growth. A marketing agency in Hamburg helped us create a new website. In 2015, we opened a physical store in Frankfurt’s Ostend. We now have eight permanent employees and some freelancers as well. We are always looking for more interested employees! We are growing internationally too: we have new sales representatives in the Netherlands, Belgium and even Scandinavia. The USA is next on the list. My job now is to keep everything on track, to motivate people and to push them forward. I really enjoy it, but it also means that I don’t need to keep on top of all the details any more.
The shoes have a really retro-futuristic design. Which was the first ekn model that embodied this vibe for you? I used to be a big fan of Nike’s Presto design. Back then it was really modern and inspired ekn’s first really relevant product, the “Bamboo” model. The shoe was created in collaboration with Daniel Bailey ( conceptkicks.com ). The “Bamboo Runner” doesn’t exist anymore, but we really loved it due to its super futuristic design. We really felt like we had created something totally new. A slip-on with a sock construction and laces on the heel, which could be tied in different ways. We were all really proud of the shoe – it was a true milestone. The design was even copied by other brands!
Which is your favourite ekn shoe in the current collection? The Larch – I wear it most. We developed this shoe with designer David Mawdsley. It was a great process – it was the first time that we created a truly contemporary trainer. It is amazingly comfortable, really soft and looks amazing from every angle.

The band ‘The Lovin’ Spoonful’ struck a nerve in 1966. With the summer hit of the same title as this editorial, it made it into the charts all over the world. Singer John Sebastian tells there of the hot, unbearable summer days in the city, marked by dirt and sweat. However, the night is when life begins. You put on your glad rags and go to a disco, find a stranger to dance with and fall in love, at least for a few hours. The narrative is about dispelling everyday stress, a little pleasure in a hectic life.

If we think of luxury, we often envisage big names, houses that are too big for their occupants, a life of excess. At the same time, luxury can also mean making your life easier through conscious decisions. A bunch of flowers on the table, an ice cream in the midday sun or reaching for a more expensive product because you feel better with it: this is how everyday luxury can look. Your own perception certainly plays the most important role here; only those who live consciously can experience luxury.

The fact that this comfort faces rejection is rooted deeply in European intellectual history. Even Plato identified a healthy society only as one that lives strictly according to its minimum needs, whilst Thomas Hobbes actually believed that human desire for luxury inevitably leads to violence and anarchy. For puritanical and ascetic Protestantism, according to Max Weber, prosperity is ethical only if it is the result of hard work and used frugally. However, a life of excess also has the very real result of social inequality. Those who flaunt their wealth exercise power over others.

We must therefore rethink luxury: not as waste, not as an instrument to express our own superiority, but rather as self-care, as a way of forging an identity. Finding out what is good, for yourself and others, and enjoying these things and moments – that is where luxury can begin. Luxury is not only if I can spend money but also if I take the time to spend a hot day by the lake with a friend and we can soothe each other’s souls. The opposite of excess is not sacrifice but rather the search for a better solution – such as planes that make the atmosphere cleaner rather than polluting it. Luxury means making good things even better.

In 1973, Quincy Jones released a cover version of ‘Summer in the City’, which also became a hit. Low strings mix with rustling percussion and playful keys. The lightness seems almost oppressive, like rising heat, before the vocals begin only in the final section, almost like an escape from the choked atmosphere of the piece. The slow-down offered by the piece is exactly what we need in the heat of the frenetic city.

In Berlin’s Bergmannkiez, we take our time. Yannick and I amble through narrow streets and courtyards. When we see the waterfall in the Viktoriapark, we breathe deeply. You can find rest here. Later we have lunch, whilst lorry drivers demonstrate 50 metres away with a convoy and horns, whilst hundreds of people rush up and down the street around us. Nonetheless, we are able to enjoy the moment. This is no ostentatious holiday, just a lovely morning of good conversation and plenty of laughter, offering emotional relief.

This summer feels different. Because of the global pandemic, many of our plans have been shattered, holidays this year are taking place not on Mediterranean islands but on the balcony or nearest campsite. Anyone who is working day in day out despite this year’s disasters must pay particular attention to taking time out. The city holds almost endless possibilities and the surrounding area offers even more space and tranquillity. Getting away from a busy schedule to take these opportunities is the first step towards everyday luxury. You will then find it where you can consciously enjoy the little and the bigger things.

Wandering around the city, without any particular destination or purpose in mind, has been fascinating locals since cities first came into existence. If you let your eyes, legs and thoughts roam free, you may even get to know the city – with all of its contradictions and its connection to people – a little better. What once began with Baudelaire and Benjamin is still very much alive to this day.

The flâneur has almost become a forgotten figure. He first appeared at the end of the 19th century – the dallier, who wanders the city’s streets and loses himself in his jaunt. The city – back then everything was new. You could drift so wonderfully, while everyone around you rushed about, buying, selling and providing. The flâneur looks and makes associations; gives free rein to feet and thoughts; impressions of people, architecture and the surroundings all merge together. The observations – the contradictions in the cityscape itself – that he discovers on his forays, lead to an examination of the effect of the place on the psyche.

It follows logically that the Situationists in 1950s France used similar methods to turn the investigation of the correlation between urban planning and psyche into a science. Following his strolls through the French capital, Guy Debord drew the “Guide psychogéographique de Paris” – a kind of map, which depicts the atmospheric units of the city, joined simply by an arrow. It feels a bit like taking the underground to discover different parts of the city, without ever finding out the connection between the different districts.

As the S-Bahn was no longer operating on the day of the shoot, we were forced to transcend these boundaries. We took a taxi towards the East and saw prefabricated concrete buildings fly past us on the left and right – concrete monsters, surrounded by parks. We arrived, with the prefab housing estate that had been specifically chosen in advance, in front of us and simply wandered. Everything here was built at the end of the 1970s, long after the days of the flâneur. These days it is mainly families and pensioners who live in this district, which was built entirely to house the GDR’s workers. And these current residents enjoy both the peace and quiet and the big city flair. We spend a few hours here and try to understand this place.

“You only really get to know an area when you have experienced it in as many different dimensions as possible”, wrote Walter Benjamin in his diary. Taking the time to really explore a place fundamentally contradicts the meaning of the city, which was created as a meeting point for trade and work, always with a clear purpose in mind. Yet the resistance to this fixed structure is as old as the structure itself. If the flâneur deliberately avoided the hustle and bustle, then the Situationists explored the mechanisms of power that are reflected in the cityscape.

And now? We walk through this district of Berlin and ponder life in this place. How it is designed to meet the needs of people, or not. We climb over walls, transformer substations and clothing recycling banks and find a new way to access our surroundings. We are not the only ones. Skaters, graffiti artists, breakdancers, punks – these are all people who belong to the masses as much as they are reinterpreting the purpose of the city. Urbanism is always a confrontation with the city’s landscape. Be it the renowned dancers, like Oona Doherty, who incorporate the city experience in their choreography, or the Pokémon Go players, who get in the way of those rushing about – discovering the city with no particular destination in mind is still very much worthwhile.

Corona is omnipresent and affects all of us. Since yesterday it has been known that our friends and partners in the retail trade have had to close their shops for an indefinite period of time. So we too have to close our shop in Frankfurt.
We support the idea of buying less and better. However, it becomes a real threat to all of us if sales are actually down. Our brand as well as many of our partners have built up their idea of Ecofashion with a lot of passion, courage and personal risk. As the financial cushion is often missing, this crisis is so threatening for many.
What can we do? Help where you can. Wash your hands and support the good indie brands, retailers and creative people by buying online - if you feel like it.
