Osier Stefan Sagmeister Edition
Like a Complete Unknown
Stefan Sagmeister × ekn footwear
Some numbers are difficult to ignore.
Like a Complete Unknown brings a data driven work by Stefan Sagmeister to the clean silhouette of the Osier Chelsea boot.
The work compares reported levels of people living on the street or in public spaces across different countries. The underlying OECD data shows striking differences, ranging from 76 people per 100,000 inhabitants in the United States and 46 in Germany to 2 in Japan.
For the shoe, Sagmeister’s visualisation was adapted to the form and proportions of the boot. Rather than being printed, the graphic is embroidered directly onto chrome free tanned smooth leather. Position, precision and overall appearance were refined through several rounds with embroidery specialists.
Sagmeister sums up the idea behind the work simply:
“So this isn’t weather. Somebody decided it, and somebody can decide otherwise.”
Like a Complete Unknown was created in connection with Stefan Sagmeister’s exhibition “Finally, Something Good.” at La Gaîté Lyrique in Paris. The shoe is not presented as a solution to homelessness. It carries a fact beyond the museum and makes it visible in everyday life.
Note: based on the Osier silhouette and fits true to size.
