We are fans of the record label Habibi Funk. One reason for this is that our friend and photographer Robert Winter is closely connected to the label. Habibi Funk has now released a magazine called Spotlights, and we have secured a few copies of the first issue for our community.

What you can expect:

  • Sun Ra in Cairo (1971)
  • A final word with Hartmut Geerken, co-founder of the Cairo Jazz Ensemble
  • Photography from Casablanca
  • Vinyl collector portraits from Brazil and Algeria
  • Lebanese bossa nova
  • A rare interview with Pale Jay
  • 92 pages, A4

It's a great project that we are happy to support. Get your Spotlights copy now.

In the words of Habibi Funk Records:

Gracing the cover of our first issue is the inimitible Sun Ra in 1971 performing in Cairo at the apartment of Cairo Jazz Ensemble co-founder Hartmut Geerken. Alongside these magnificent photos we publish a comprehensive final conversation with the late Geerken from his Germany home in 2021. We delve into the visual world of Morrocan studio photographer Fouad Zerrei, profile anonymous Soul singer Pale Jay and explore Mulatu Astatke's timeless Ethio-jazz hit Tezeta as a cinematic tool in RaMell Ross' 2024 film Nickel Boys. We also invite vinyl collectors Algerian Vinyl and CrocoDiscos to share their most beloved records.
